Abstract:
A Hamiltonian treatment of the Landau theory of phase transitions is presented. This formulation is based on the analogy between the order parameter space and the ordinary coordinate space of a particle moving in two dimensions. As an application, ferroelectric smectic liquid crystals are considered.
