Stable states in ferroelectric liquid crystals

Abstract:
We study the stability of the molecular structure of DOBAMBC(4)), a prototype of ferroelectric liquid crystals, using the linear stability analysis for Hamiltonian systems. We show the existence of thermodynamically stable states in a narrow temperature region Delta T = 1 degrees C, between the A-phase and the ordinary smectic C*-phase.
